Starting a new school year can feel exciting, but it can also feel a little overwhelming for young children. New teachers. New friends. New routines. Even children who are excited about school may feel nervous about what to expect. The good news is that confidence can be practiced. One of the simplest ways to help children prepare for the school year is by creating a "Practice School Day" at home. Step 1: Practice the Morning Routine A few days before school starts, try waking up at the same time your child will wake up for school.
Following the routine before the first day helps children know what to expect and reduces surprises. Step 2: Create Simple Independence Challenges Many school skills have very little to do with academics.
Turn these tasks into fun challenges and celebrate each success. Step 3: Practice Following Directions Try a simple game where you give two or three directions at once. "Touch your nose, spin around, and sit down." Children love the game, and they are secretly practicing an important classroom skill. Step 4: Talk About Feelings Ask your child what they are excited about and what they might be nervous about. Listen carefully. Sometimes children simply need permission to share their worries. Remind them that feeling nervous about new experiences is completely normal. Step 5: Celebrate Their Readiness At the end of your practice day, talk about everything your child accomplished. Point out the skills they already have. Confidence grows when children recognize their own successes. Why Activities Like This Matter When children feel prepared, they are more likely to enter the classroom feeling confident and ready to learn. At Early Childhood Academy, we help children build these same skills every day through routines, hands on activities, social interactions, and opportunities to practice independence. While academic learning is important, confidence, communication, and problem solving are often the skills that help children thrive throughout the school year. The first day of school does not have to feel scary. With a little preparation and encouragement, it can become an exciting new adventure. And sometimes, all it takes is one practice day to help a child realize they are more ready than they think. |
